Enhancing Security on Windows Server: The Power of DNS Filtering
Operating a Windows Server comes with its share of security challenges. Given its popularity as a server platform, it is a prime target for hackers and malicious software. To fortify your server against these threats, implementing DNS filtering is an effective strategy.
Selecting the Right DNS Provider for Windows Server
A variety of DNS providers are available that support content filtering, enhancing your server’s security. This guide will focus on NextDNS, renowned for its user-friendly interface and simplicity in setup. If you prefer other DNS providers for your Windows Server filtering needs, feel free to explore alternatives, although this tutorial will primarily cover NextDNS.
Here are some reputable DNS providers you might consider:
- Cloudflare DNS: Prioritizes privacy and rapid performance.
- Quad9 DNS: Emphasizes customization and robust security features.
- OpenDNS: Offers comprehensive filtering options and malware protection.
To start using NextDNS, you’ll need to create an account through the official NextDNS website. Simply click the "Try it now" button to begin the registration process.
Once your account is active, log in and navigate to the “Setup” tab to proceed.
Setting Up NextDNS on Your Windows Server via HTTPS (Recommended)
Begin the setup by accessing the Control Panel on your Windows Server. Search for "Control Panel" in the Start menu and open it. From there, navigate to “Network and Internet" and select “Network and Sharing Center.”
Next, find “Change Adapter Settings.” Right-click your default network adapter and choose the properties option.
Configuring IPv6
In the network adapter settings, locate “Internet Protocol Version 6” and access its properties. Change the setting from “Obtain DNS server address automatically” to “Use the following DNS server addresses.”
Head to the NextDNS dashboard in your web browser, access the “Setup” tab, and scroll to the IPv6 section. Copy the first address and paste it into the “Preferred DNS server” field. Follow by copying the second IPv6 address into the “Alternate DNS server” box. Save your changes by clicking “OK.”
Configuring IPv4
Repeat the process for IPv4 by opening “Internet Protocol Version 4” in the properties section. Change the setting to “Use the following DNS server addresses,” and repeat the actions of copying and pasting the addresses from the NextDNS dashboard for both the Preferred and Alternate DNS server fields. After saving these changes, your network adapter configuration is complete.
Quickly Implementing NextDNS on Windows Server
For your convenience, you can also install the NextDNS application, which simplifies the setup process without manual DNS configuration. To install, go to the “Setup” tab in NextDNS and scroll to “NextDNS for Windows.” Click the link to download the installation executable.
Once downloaded, run the installer from your "Downloads" folder. The application will automatically launch after installation and configure itself to start whenever Windows Server boots.
With the app running, revisit the NextDNS dashboard to copy your Configuration ID from the "Setup" tab. Open the NextDNS client from the system tray, input your ID in the designated text box, and save your changes. Lastly, right-click the NextDNS icon in the system tray and select “Enable” to activate NextDNS on your server.
Securing Your Windows Server with DNS Filtering
After enabling NextDNS, it’s time to set up filtering to reinforce your server’s security. Access the NextDNS dashboard again and click on the “Privacy” tab. Here, you will find numerous DNS filters at your disposal. Some filters are already activated by default, providing immediate protection. However, for enhanced security, review and enable additional filters that suit your needs.
By implementing these DNS filters, you’ve taken a significant step in securing your Windows Server. With this robust protection in place, you can rest easier knowing your server is fortified against potential threats. Enjoy peace of mind as you navigate the digital landscape!
