Optimizing Jellyfin Backups on Windows Server: A Comprehensive Guide
If you’re managing a Jellyfin media server on Windows Server, safeguarding your valuable media library is crucial. Implementing an automatic backup system can ensure your content remains safe. In this article, we’ll guide you through using the built-in Windows Server Backup tool to effortlessly schedule backups for your Jellyfin library.
Installing Windows Server Backup
To get started, you’ll need to install the Windows Server Backup feature on your system. Begin by launching the Server Manager application. Click on the “Manage” button and select “Add Roles and Features.”
Within the “Add Roles and Features Wizard,” proceed to the “Server Selection” step, where you can choose your server. Next, navigate to the “Features” section, scroll until you find the “Windows Server Backup” option, check its box, and click “Install.” A reboot will be required after installation to activate the backup feature.
Configuring Windows Server Backup
After rebooting, open the Windows Server Backup program by searching for it in the Start menu. Once the application is open, select “Local Backup” from the options provided.
To set up your backup schedule, click on “Backup Schedule.” This will launch the “Backup Schedule Wizard.” Follow the prompts, and upon reaching the configuration options, opt for “Custom” to back up specific content rather than performing a full system backup.
Note: If you wish to include your Jellyfin metadata in your backups, consider adding the directory
C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Local\jellyfin\metadata
to your sources.
Click on the “Add Items” button and select your Jellyfin library from the list. You can then specify your backup schedule, determining both the frequency and timing of the backups, before proceeding.
Selecting Backup Location
The next crucial step is selecting a backup location. You have several options, including backing up to a dedicated hard drive, a volume, or a shared network folder. Once you’ve configured your preferred location, finalize your setup by clicking “Next.”
Creating Manual Backups with Windows Server Backup
While scheduled backups are essential for ongoing data protection, occasionally creating a manual backup can provide added security for your Jellyfin library. To do this, initiate the Windows Server Backup tool and select “Local Backup” from the sidebar.
In the Actions pane, click on “Backup Once” to open the “Backup Once Wizard.” From there, you can choose the same backup options you’ve set up in your scheduled backups. Select “Backup” to initiate an immediate backup, which may take some time depending on your data size.
Restoring from Backup
To restore your previously created backups—whether manual or automatic—start by locating the “Recover” option in the Actions area and clicking on it. This will open the “Recovery Wizard” on your screen.
You’ll need to specify where the backup you want to recover is stored. If it’s not located on the server, select the alternative option for a backup stored elsewhere. After identifying your backup’s location, a calendar view will present available backups. Select the desired backup and proceed by clicking “Next.”
Next, choose your preferred recovery type—“Files and Folders” for specific items or “Volumes” for complete restoration. Complete the process using the Windows Server Backup tool to restore your data effectively.
By following these steps, you can ensure that your Jellyfin media library is regularly backed up and easily recoverable. Automating your backup process not only saves time but also provides peace of mind that your valuable media is protected from unforeseen incidents.
